The insect family Coenagrionidae is found in the order Odonata and the suborder Zygoptera. The Zygoptera are the damselflies, which although less known than the dragonflies, are no less common. There are more than 1000 species in this family. Making this family the largest damselfly family. Coenagrionidae has six subfamilies and they are Agriocnemidinae, Argiinae, Coenagrioninae, Ischnurinae, Leptobasinae, and Pseudagrioninae.

This family is referred to as the Narrow-winged damselflies or the Pond damselflies. The Coenagrionidae enjoy a world-wide distribution, and are among the most common of damselfly families. This family has the smallest of damselfly species.

More 90 genera of the family Coenagrionidae are currently accepted.

CASTELLANO
Los cenagriónidos (Coenagrionidae) son una familia de odonatos del suborden Zygoptera de tamaño pequeño a mediano (20 a 45 mm); son los más comunes y se encuentran distribuidos en todo el mundo, con el cuerpo más o menos fino y patas y abdomen corto. Tienen la cabeza alargada transversalmente y los ojos separados. Los adultos inmaduros por lo general son más pálidos, de color castaño claro con líneas o manchas blancuzcas. Las alas son agostas, ambos pares con forma y venación similares.

Su coloración es muy diversa; los machos generalmente son de colores vistosos celeste, rojo, verde y las hembras de color castaño. Las hembras tienen ovipositor y el abdomen más corto y grueso que el de los machos.
