• the Curtis Bldg. (L) housed the Curtis Publishing Co., publisher of influential 20th c. magazines such as the Ladies' Home Journal & The Saturday Evening Post • the Georgian Revival structure was built in 1912, designed by Philadelphia architect Edgar Viguers Seeler (1867-1929) for owner Cyrus H. K. Curtis (1850-1933)

• 1902 photo of the building’s site prior to construction

• In 1913, Curtis purchased the Public Ledger (1836-1942), Philadelphia’s 1st penny paper, published daily in a building adjacent to Curtis's new structure • for a time, its sensationalist headlines & affordable price made it the city's most popular newspaper but by the early 1860s, it was operating at a loss

• circulation had declined in part as a result of the Ledger’s endorsement of Copperhead opposition to the American Civil War, advocating peace via compromise with the Confederate States of America

• Curtis reinvigorated the paper by purchasing competing publications • commissioned a new 12-story Public Ledger Bldg. (R) to replace the existing (1867) Ledger headquarters [photo], which had been designed by Scotland-born Philadelphia architect John McArthur Jr. (1823-1890) • McArthur was also responsible for the design of Philadelphia City Hall

• the new (1924) Public Ledger Building was designed by Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer (1868-1938) to harmonize with the neighboring Seeler design • The Trumbauer Firm, Philadelphia Free Library

• the Ledger folded in 1942, the building • both the Public Ledger & Curtis Bldgs. (now the Curtis Center) were renovated and now house offices
