Where U.S. Gen. George Thomas defeated Conf. Gen. Hood in the Battle of Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta

            This is what Peach Tree Creek Battlefield looks like today from the air.

Much of the U.S. Army under General George Henry Thomas, who led under the command of his college friend General William Tecumseh Sherman, would have marched up the hill, southwards toward the modern brown hospital building in the left-center of this photograph. The main line of the Confederate Army would have been up there. Tanyard Creek is the slightly open space in the middle. My drone is hovering above the remains of old Collier's Mill on the northside of Tanyard Creek Park. Peach Tree Creek is to the rear. 

The modern skyscrapers of downtown Atlanta can be seen to the south in the center of the image.

Sherman's army was now knocking at the outskirts of Atlanta. Confederate General John Bell Hood's plan in his mind was to decimate the troops of the undefeated U.S. General, George Henry Thomas, as U.S. troops crossed Peach Tree Creek. Unfortunately for the young Confederate general, who was newly appointed to replace General Joseph E. Johnston, it didn't go down the way he imagined. In fairness, it was his predecessor's plan, Johnston's. Hood's predecessor, Joseph Johnston, was replaced because he also could not gain the upper hand over George Henry Thomas (e.g. Battle of Dalton) or General Sherman. And before Johnston, Confederate General Bragg had no luck either. The youthful Hood, who certainly did not lack confidence or aggressive talk, was Confederate President Jefferson Davis' Hail Mary pass to stop the U.S. from occupying the rebel-city of Atlanta.

On to Atlanta. The successful Western Theater of the Civil War was now merged into the Eastern Theater.
