The Last Time

I'm reading a book called "Death in Zion National Park" (Christmas gift) and having just finished the chapter about the Angels Landing Trail, I decided to look at my photos from that hike. It's really like two hikes in one. The first two miles are on a paved but steep trail that leads to a point called Scout Lookout, which is approximately where I took this photo. (It's also just short of where I chickened out and turned back on my first attempt at the age of 25. Made it to the top on four or five subsequent tries, including this one.)

The rest of the hike is shown here; despite the bad light, bad focus, and poor composition it's pretty obvious that this is no walk in the park. It involves a scramble up the side of a rock that's never more than a few feet wide with about a 1000' drop on both sides. (Several hikers are visible above and to the left of the photo-bomber's head.) There are some chains to help as hand-holds that can't be seen here, but they work better for some people than others, depending on your height. Anyway, it's a great hike with a terrific reward of both an outstanding view as well as a sense of accomplishment at the top, but I decided at the time that it would be my final hike here. Too steep, too scary, too many risks, and too many people have died here. (In fact, too many people period, some of whom seem to know nothing about trail etiquette nor care about anybody's safety. For the first time ever, hikers will need a permit for this part of the trail beginning in April, 2022.)
