One of Several Sites - a photo on Flickriver

The Civilian Conservation Corps did lots of work in the Tucson area in the 1930s and 1940s that survives today. Among their many accomplishments, they built roads, dams, hiking trails, and picnic areas.

This was taken from the parking lot at the Gates Pass overlook in Tucson Mountain Park. The CCC built the structure seen about halfway up the hill. I didn't climb up there on this visit, but I think there's a table inside and the intention was that it would be used as a shelter from the sun. As it always did, the CCC's worked blended with the natural surroundings perfectly. I doubt that either the wall in the foreground or the one that nearly encircles the ramada (or the ramada itself) was a CCC project; they look to have been built more recently, but with the same consideration for their appearance.

The CCC also built several picnic areas that are now in nearby Saguaro National Park (Tucson Mountain District) that are still in use. (At the time, the entire area was part of Tucson Mountain Park; federal protection came in 1961 when part of the county park was acquired by the US government and added to Saguaro National Monument. National park status was gained in 1994.) It would be a fun day to visit and photograph all of the picnic areas. They're found in scenic spots like this one.
