George Washington Grist Mill - a photo on Flickriver

            This is a reconstructed replica of the original George Washington Grist Mill in Perryopolis, Pennsylvania. The mill was completed by Amish carpenters in 1995. Then the waterwheel was added in 1999. It was shipped from a mill in West Virginia. The old original mill was completed in 1776. It was built for George Washington by Gilbert Simpson. Washington owned 1600 acres of land in the Perryopolis area, and was a prominent figure in all sorts of Western Pennsylvania history. He leased his mill to Colonel Israel Shreve 1779, as General Washington was a very busy man. Both Shreve and Washington passed away in 1799. The mill passed through various owners after that including Powell Hugh, John Strickler, Jacob Strawn, George Anderson, and Samuel Smith. Fittingly, the stream by the mill is named Washington Run. The mill site is fenced on private property to protect it from vandals.
