Etta Hulme was a prolific cartoonist. From 1972 to 2008, she drew editorial cartoons for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Her cartoons covered topics ranging from foreign affairs to local issues like school board elections. One of her favorites was the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which provided that rights guaranteed under the Constitution would apply equally to all persons regardless of their sex. Congress passed the 19th Amendment in 1920, giving women the right to vote. Suffragist leader Alice Paul originally introduced the ERA in 1923. Congress did not pass the amendment until 1972. When sent to the states for ratification, only 35 states approved the amendment, leaving the ERA three votes short of the 38 votes required to modify the Constitution. Despite the failure to ratify the ERA, Etta continued her support by drawing cartoons and lending her voice to the cause.
