F-1 Saturn V Rocket Engine, Air & Space Museum, Weatherford, Stafford Airport,Ok

            The F-1 Rocket Engine from the Saturn V spacecraft is the most powerful single-nozzle liquid fueled engine ever used. It was developed to meet a  1955 United States Air Force requirement and was first tested in 1959. The F1 is 19 feet long and 12.4 feet in diameter. It weighed 18,416 lbs dry and 20,096 lbs burn out. The F-1 rocket engine produced 1.5 million lbs of thrust and powered the Saturn V. Five of these were used as the first stage of the rocket with one in the middle and the other four around the middle rocket engine. To enable the Saturn V to move in a specific direction, the four outer F-1 Rocket Engines swiveled (gimbled) to move the rocket in the direction needed. General Thomas P Stafford, after whom the airport and museum is named, was born in Weatherford and became an astronaut flying aboard two Gemini space flights; and in 1969 was the commander of Apollo 10, the second manned mission to orbit the Moon and the first to fly a lunar module there. In 1975, Stafford was commander of the Apollo-Soyuz flight, the first joint US-Soviet space mission. A brigadier general at the time, he became the first general officer to fly in space.
