Movie-Fan Princess (1966)

In the 1960s (particularly after the Beatles played in Hong Kong on June 10 1964) there was a local rock scene that chose to sing in English. Before that most pop lyrics were in Mandarin as the music and movie industry primarily came out of pre-Communist Shanghai. A big shift occurred when Hong Kong locals began singing in Cantonese (historically spearheaded by Sam Hui). What is common to this day is that a lot of Hong Kong pop singers are movie actors, in fact some non-singing movie actors release albums due to guaranteed lucrative remuneration. That is why some of these records are not collected for their musical wherewithal. It’s the kitchy cover. And don’t imagine that just because Connie Chan Po-chu is holding a guitar that she rocks out on this one. This 45 rpm title is from the soundtrack of the film, Movie-Fan Princess (1966). Frequently in this type of movie, the lead actress appears at a nightclub holding a guitar, seemingly backed by a rock band, but the music coming from the screen is a down-tempo ballad backed by traditional Chinese instrumentation.

Connie Chan Po-chu (陳寶珠) is still active today in Hong Kong musical theater.
