This intriguing plant has the common names: wild maracuja, bush passion fruit, marya-marya, wild water lemon, stinking passionflower,stoneflower love-in-a-mist or running pop and is a species of passion flower out of 550 species of Passiflora that is native to the southwestern United States (southern Texas and Arizona ), Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, Africa ,and much of South America. It has been introduced to tropical regions around the world,such as Southeast Asia, South Asia, Hawaii, and The Maldives .It is a creeping vine like other members of the genus, and yields an edible fruit. The specific epithet , foetida, means "stinking" in Latinand refers to the strong aroma emitted by damaged foliage.

Passiflora foetida (gemeenschappelijke namen: wilde maracuja, bush passievrucht, marya-marya, wilde watercitroen, stinkende passiebloem, steenbloem liefde-in-a-mist of rennende pop) is een soort passiebloem uit 550 soorten Passiflora dat is afkomstig uit het zuidwesten van de Verenigde Staten (Zuid-Texas en Arizona), Mexico, het Caribisch gebied, Midden-Amerika, Afrika en een groot deel van Zuid-Amerika. Het is geïntroduceerd in tropische regio's over de hele wereld, zoals Zuidoost-Azië, Zuid-Azië, Hawaï en de Malediven.Het is een kruipende wijnstok zoals andere leden van het geslacht en levert een eetbare vrucht op. De soortnaam foetida betekent "stinken" in het Latijn en verwijst naar het sterke aroma dat wordt afgegeven door beschadigd blad.
