San Francisco's Fog City Diner in color: 2

It's completely dead at 11pm in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf area on a Tuesday night. I just captured a few good shots of this diner, and thought a frontal shot of the door would be cool. I set up my tripod IN THE STREET. There were no people walking around and barely any cars, so I figured it would be alright to shoot from that spot. Plus, technically it was in a parking spot.

The exposures are long for this shot and I'm watching for cars coming down the street.

Lo and behold a cop car comes. We know this drill.

As he pulls up, I ask him if it's ok I shoot from that spot. Surprisingly, he said that it's alright. That I should just watch to see if cars are coming down the street.

Wow, that's nice. It looks like he starts to drive away, but he's only moving up, so he can pull his car in closer to me. We end up having a very nice conversation as he tells me that he's also a photographer and there are so many times that when he's on patrol that he would like to snap some photos. He admitted that a couple times he brought out his point-n-shoot with bean bag tripod and set it on his window to grab a quick shot.

We talked about the crime in the city, and he said it's gotten far worse in the eight years since I was last there. He even admitted that when he sees guys like me out at night that he tells his partner to write up the report for that guy getting mugged, cuz he know that it's inevitable. That was it for me, as soon as we were done talking, I didn't even bother finishing my exposures, instead I hailed a taxi.

I guess I'm spoiled that I feel safe being able to take photos in downtown Chicago late at night.

But I will always remember this shot as one of the few times that a police officer was really nice with me while I was shooting photos with my tripod.
