St Mary's Church, Whitby - a photo on Flickriver

            It's situated up on the cliffs, next to Whitby Abbey and has to be one of the weirdest churches I've ever been in. The pews weren't running parallel to each other facing a pulpit at the front; instead they were all separate boxes (with seating going all the way round each one). The layout reminded me of a cattle market for some reason. I have never seen a church laid out like that before. 

There is no artificial lighting in the church either, when illumination is needed it is provided by candles(you can just make out the huge chandelier in the top right).

The pulpit (top left, between the pillars) has 3 levels. For services the Parish Clerk sits in the bottom deck; the priest taking the service uses the middle deck; and the sermon is given from the preaching box at the top.

The church has had an aisleless nave throughout its 876 years. The galleries up above were added to provide further seating. It looked pretty cool up there too but it was cordoned off (all the best bits of places always are!)
