Some Steps to Lake Illawarra Light - a photo on Flickriver

            Some quick steps to produce the image that you saw below:

1. Blend 8 RAW original images using Photoshop CS3's amazing "Photomerge" command - found under File/Automate/Photomerge.. it's so good it's embarrassing to admit how you got the results ;-) Note though that I take LOTS of shots with HEAPS of overlap to get the images that I merge - more data equals better lines and blends.

2. You don't see it here but I warp and stretch the edges until I get a good area to crop which results in the nice clean rectangle you see here.

3. I went into LAB colour space and played around with the curves in the A and B channel. This sounds a lot more techy than it is and it's a pure feel thing rather than rules.. but it rocks for bringing up the colour that RAW naturally doesn't include.

4. Having done that I went to selective colour and played with reds, yellows and magentas to bring up the energy. I also did a little shadow and highlights adjustments to bring some more light to the dark areas and bring back the over lit areas a tad. I also widened the canvas and then transformed the whole image to stretch it wider - to give a more dramatic effect. Oh.. and I think I went back to LAB mode here to sharpen the Lightness channel and give the A and B channels another quick tweak ;-)

5. Having arrived at the general place I wanted to be I framed it by extending the canvas height first in white and then just the bottom to give it an asymmetric frame. Next I dropped in my water mark and added the text you see.. I also compressed the adjustment layers (command+E on a mac) and saved out to JPEG for uploading to flickr..

And that's about it ;-)

I'm sure that this post is only for photo nerds - but I thought you might like to see behind the curtain a little ;-)
