Newcastle upon Tyne 0411 - a photo on Flickriver

            Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Westgate Hall. Newcastle, like most cities, has contrasting areas of affluence and deprivation. Elswick to the North east of the city is one such area, the main road, Westgate Road has patches of dereliction as it heads out of the centre, yet there are also buildings of real distinction, like the grade 2 listed Westgate Hall. Designed in 1900-2 by Crouch and Butler of Birmingham, as a Wesleyan Mission Hall and school, it is now the Hill Song Church. Like many Methodist halls, the Westgate has had some cinema use in the past, the main hall is complete with a balcony, ornate plasterwork and a proscenium arched style stage. The Kinematograph Yearbook of 1914 has it listed, as the Westgate Mission Hall, with 1,300 seats, under the control of the Rev H Cooper. It is unlikely to have been equipped with sound, probably closing before 1930.
