Odeon Covent Garden 1513 - a photo on Flickriver

Odeon Cinema, Covent Garden, London (Saville Theatre). Opened 1931 as a live theatre, designed by T P Bennett & Son with Bertie Crewe. Located at the upper end of Shaftesbury Avenue, it was suited for either plays or musicals. It was sold to ABC in 1970, and the art deco interior gutted to form a twin cinema, later quadrupled. Many name changes, currently the Odeon Covent Garden, but is the subject of redevelopment, though permission for the latest scheme was refused. Grade 2 listed, largely because of the spectacular bas-relief frieze (and 5 double disc panels) by Gilbert Bayes. Much of the 1970 twin design remains, and the four screens all seem spacious and comparatively large. The stage is believed to be largely intact, although in other uses.
