Le Jardin des Quatre Saisons - a photo on Flickriver

            It looks pitiful. The association that runs the castle seems to have problems. Years ago, when I visited the castle the first time, it was still run by the Foundation Fürstenberg (which isn't the owner anymore). The garden looked so much better at that time. The castle itself was built in the 17th century. The wife of Eugène-Alexandre de Montmorency-Laval (1773-1851), duke of Laval, Maximilienne de Béthune-Sully (1772-1833) created the garden in the 19th century. She planted trees there, and it was called "the Garden of the Duchess". It was some kind of "romantic" garden. A century later, Dmitri Pawlowitsch Romanow (1891–1942) and his wife Audrey Emery (1904-1971) cut the trees. Left only lawn and some shrubs in flower pots. But they brought a fountain from a voyage to Italy. Jean Fürstenberg (1890-1982) and his wife Eugénie changed the garden in the 1950. They tried to restore it's character to that of a French formal garden, like it probably was in the 17th century. They added the four statues that symbolize the four seasons, hence the name of the garden.
