April 21st 2008 - I Will Turn You Inside Out

            First things first... nothing special today except for the fact that we filmed the podcast again today after work, and I helped a friend get his own podcast going. Fun fun..

So now to this photo. I had been thinking for a week about how to do this assignment for the CWD group "Inspired by REM".

I didn't want to do this half assed since... these guys kind of shaped who I am today. They made me think about politics, environmentalism, how to treat your fellow human being... and most importantly, they inspired me to play music.

I remember sitting with my friends at a campout and a fellow scout knew most of my favorite REM songs. We sang for hours. Later someone taught me to play "Pop Song '89" and I was all over it after that.

In my band One Like Son we played "The One I Love", "Driver 8", "The End Of The World As I Know It", "Superman", "Orange Crush", "Begin the Begin" among others. We were all big fans.

So, when this assignment came up, I wanted to do it right. I went through the catalog and tried to find songs that inspired me photographically. I had settled on "Maps and Legends" thinking that it would make a great photo. But then I watched "Tour Film"

Tour Film is a feature length concert from the Green Tour back in '89. I remember seeing this film for the first time and just being in awe of how Michael Stipe carried himself. He was truly a performer and an artist. He inspired me to use my voice to talk about things that I cared about when I was on stage myself. I also loved how punk they could be despite their pop material. I've since aspired to do the same.

So here's me doing my best to honor Michael's performance from Tour Film.

The song I was inspired by is "Turn You Inside Out", but I couldn't find my bullhorn... so I probably look more like how he looked in "I Believe"
