Hundred Million Years - a photo on Flickriver

            More than one hundred million years ago, granite formed deep underground in what is now known as the Sierra Nevada range. The range started to uplift less than five million years ago, and erosion by glaciers exposed the granite and formed the light-colored mountains and cliffs that make up the range.  The Alabama Hills has hundreds of small granite arches, but most of them are found about one to four miles to the south. Boot Arch is one of the few arches in this part of the Alabama Hills. What makes Boot Arch special is that the arch actually looks like its name.
