Hiking down to Callaghan Lake, BC, Canada

Beautiful deep glacial lake in the Callaghan Valley, near Whistler, BC, Canada.  The Lake has a waterfall at one end fed by water from Cirque lake above the Callaghan Valley.  The hard resistant granitic rocks form a steep (`350m) .chute from Cirque Lake which is prone to avalanches and rock falls in the winter.  There are abundant debris fields which are also known as talus or scree slopes depending on the size of the boilders. The sides and bottom of the valley comprise numerous polished and strated erosional rock mounds known as roche moutonees or whalebacks which were carved out by the glacier that formed the valley.

The rocks are mainly granitic, igneous rocks (mostly altered granodiorite).  The Callaghan Valley below is filled with quite recent basaltic extrusive igneous rocks, with at least 5 lava flows which can be seen at Alexander Falls and further down the valley at Brandywine Falls.

 The lake is in Callaghan Provincial Park and on the horizon is the mainly volcanic rocks of Garbaldi Provincial Park.  

The forest is made up mainly of Western Hemlock, Douglas Fir and Cedar.
