Scots Pine Bonsai - Back-budding - a photo on Flickriver

New back-buds on a young bonsai Scots Pine tree. The new growth was allowed to harden off so the tree could regain its strength before the branch tips were pruned (always leaving some of this year's needles) to promote the production of vegetative buds which will result in new candle growth the following year. This technique induces dense back-budding resulting in greater ramification (more branching). The colander-grown tree was fertilized heavily with Biogold pellets before this operation took place.
