Mike - a photo on Flickriver

Mike

            Mike was on the northeast corner of Lake and Clark, writing a sign on a piece of cardboard.  He's been out here for about six weeks.  "This is my second time out here", he said.  He was employed and was staying in an apartment but his landlord's apartment burned down and he was out on the street again.  "I usually don't sleep on the train", he said, "people steal from you!  There was a mob of kids a few weeks ago near State Street and Madison and someone stole the phone right from my hand--never had that happen before!"  He considers himself more of a loner and sleeps in an alley, "but I would like to get a tent and stay with some people over by I-90.  "They watch out for each other."  Right now, he resorts to hiding his valuables so they don't get stolen.  When he was on the train a few years ago, he was sleeping and someone tried to steal his backpack.  When he resisted, he was assaulted and woke up on the ground, awakened by the police.  "(Being homeless) could happen to any one of us".
