Château de Chenonceau - a photo on Flickriver

            My partner and I spent a glorious week in the Loire Valley in 2004.  We visited our absinthe-distilling friends in Saumur, and drove around to see various castles and other sights.  There are so many more castles to see, we have to go back.

This castle, built on the river Cher, is in my opinion the most beautiful castle in France.  It was given to Diane de Poitiers, King Henri II's mistress.  When the king died, his widow Catherine de Medici kicked Diane out and put her own influence on the castle.  During WWI, the long gallery spanning the river was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers.  During WWII, the Cher river was the border of the Nazi occupation, and many people escaped the occupation by crossing the river through the castle.  Today the castle and its superb gardens (one devoted to Diane, one to Catherine) are beautifully maintained as a popular tourist attraction.
