Mikoikoi path - Zealandia - Wellington New Zealand

            I was taken by the bright splashes of white lining this forest path in Zealandia, the wildlife sanctuary in Wellington city, New Zealand.  The blooms brightening the path are mikoikoi Mikoikoi  – native iris – Libertia grandiflora.
Mikoikoi belongs to the family iridaceae are an attractive member of the iris family native to New Zealand. This pretty little plant is popular in Kiwi gardens for its foliage – the white three-petalled flowers neither much resembling garden irises nor particularly showy, except in mass natural planting as seen here. The leaves, however, are an attractive green and even more spectacular when grown in the full sun for they then turn a bold orange yellow, often with a pale stipe. The long lasting berries  are also very attractive and provide garden colour long into winter. In the wild this little iris seems just as comfortable alongside the edges of tracks in deep shaded forest, where the leaves are green, as it is in sunny clearing (usually near streams) where the leaves are golden. Crowe (Which native Forest Plant) notes that the main difference between the two species (L. ixioides and L.grandiflora) is that the flowering stalks of grandiflora are usually longer than, and held above, the leaves (as in this picture) whereas the flowering stalks of ixioides are usually shorter than the leaves. The tough leaves were once recommended for paper making.
