Tribute to Zygmunt Szendzielarz on the wall of Primary School 395

            He was born in 1910 and fought against German and Soviet forces during the defence of Poland in 1939. He was captured by the Soviets near Lublin but managed to escape and eventually settled in Wilno (Vilnius) which was under Soviet occupation from 1939 to 1941, but was then occupied by the Germans until 1944 and then re-occupied by Soviet forces.  

Szendzielarz joined the Polish resistance in 1943 and organised his own partisan group in the forests surrounding Wilno, which fought against the German army and SS units in the southern Wilno Voivodeship and also against Soviet partisans. He was arrested by the Lithuanian police in April 1944 and handed over to the Gestapo, but again managed to escape. 

In 1944, as Soviet forces advanced into Polish territory, Szendzielarz moved his unit into central Poland. He continued the armed struggle against Poland's Soviet occupiers and the newly formed Polish communist authorities, but decided to disband the unit in 1946, considering further resistance to the Soviet occupation of Poland to be futile. 

Szendzielarz was arrested by the Polish seccret police in June 1948 and, after two years of brutal interrogation and torture in Warsaw's Mokotów Prison, he was sentenced to death on 2nd November 1950. He was executed on 8th February 1951, together with several other members of Poland's wartime resistance movement. In 2013 his remains were recovered and identified as one of roughly 300 people buried in a mass grave in "Kwatera Ł" of Powązki Military Cemetery.
