The Sacred Pelvis of Saint Berencardus

The Sacred Pelvis of Saint Berencardus was first revealed in 1093 when the Benedictine monk died of natural causes. The monk was buried in a quiet ceremony, his body intact. The next day the skeletal remains of his pelvis was found on the monastery kitchen counter. Several attempts were made to rebury it, both with and apart from the monk, and even with a wooden stake through it's coccyx. Yet each time the pelvis would reappear the night afterwards.

Finally it was noted that with the reappearance of the pelvis a new cask of wine would be found in the cellar. So, the monks finally gave up trying to bury the bones. The pelvis of Saint Berencardus was hung over the altar and the monks sought canonization.

In 1388 the monastery was raided by Lala Şahin Pasha during the Battle of Bileća. The pelvis was looted along with the rest of the monastery's artifacts. Şahin was trounced shortly after, and the pelvis went missing.

Little was known about the location of the pelvis until it appeared again on the auction block in 1745, and was purchased by Charles Edward Stuart. This led to the Forty-five Rebellion. In Derby England, the pelvis was divided and half was shipped to the Orient never to be seen again. The opposite half was shipped to the New World.

The left half of the pelvis was found inside a wall in a farmer's home in Pisgah Missouri in 1972. Initially it was thought to be the remains of a murder victim. However the pelvis bore a tag that read "Saint Berencardus, Do not Submerge". The local sheriff contacted a historian at the University of Central Missouri and the bone was identified as the lost pelvis of Saint Berencardus. It created a sensation around Pisgah, but the farmer considered it to be worthless and donated it to the Salvation Army.

Initially the Salvation Army tried to tap into the power of the pelvis, but it seemed to be powerless. It was placed among the goods for sale at a Goodwill store in Columbia Missouri.

A day later it was purchased by Eugene Eubanks as he was passing through town and brought to New Orleans Louisiana. Eugene took it to Saint Roch Cemetery #1 and hung it on the wall of the chapel where it remains today.
