Fresh Lightning Strike Scar On Hunt Camp Rd.

            In Florida, in May and June, lightning storms are a natural part of the ecosystem, starting wildfires that clear out the underbrush and prepare soil for new growth.  I try to remind myself of this when on beach turtle patrol with the thunderboomers moving in.  QUESTION: You're on the SVNWR beach doing turtle patrol, and you hear thunder,  where is the safest place to go?  Off the beach into the trees?  To the Chicken Shack or Maintenance Shop?  To the Cabin?  ANSWER:  According to NOAA, IMMEDIATELY go to the Cabin, or to an enclosed structure or vehicle.  (NOT the Polaris, and NOT the chicken shack or Maintenance shop, and certainly NOT under the trees-see above photo.)  BE SAFE!  The turtle nests will be there after the lightning passes by.
