This huge cavern, known (for obvious reasons) as the Cathedral, is a large chamber in the abandoned Box Mine, Wiltshire. The mining of this area started as long ago as the Roman occupation, and since then the site has grown into a huge network of more than fifty miles of tunnels. Now the site is no longer in use as a mine, it’s been abandoned to the bats who now call it home, resulting in its designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. As well as the bats, the dark tunnels are filled with rusting equipment, cranes, miners’ graffiti and some unexpected wells – part of the site is also re-purposed, used to create the Central Government War Headquarters to house the government in case of nuclear attack. It’s a fascinating place for its both history and its nature.
