Hermit Thrush (Catharus guttatus faxoni) - 20231014-10

            Medium brown above with contrasting reddish tail. Dark spots on breast do not continue all the way down belly like Wood Thrush. Found in wooded areas; often hops on the ground or skulks in dense patches of shrubbery. Winters further north than other thrushes; many stay in the U.S. Listen for its beautiful song that is higher pitched than other thrushes with a steady introductory note; also gives low "chup" call note. We saw a surprising number of Hermit Thrushes during our Big Day in PEC.  This one was had snagged a large and juicy bug, but it seems that it wasn't as tasty as hoped.  It dropped the bug, shook its head, picked it up again and then left it behind as it disappeared into the undergrowth.  I don't think the bug survived the experience.
