One dollah, one dollah....A crash course in the Basics of Marketing. Luang Prabang, Laos

            I came across this little girl at Wat Pahouak in Luang Prabang. I am nowadays fascinated by these persuasive souvenir sellers at the tourist sites all over the world. She was not seeking alms, but driving commerce. Of course, I bought a trinket and helped her family finances and the Laotian economy!! It is very difficult to stop child labour when the family is in dire financial straits and the state is not willing to step in with either welfare or guaranteed income programs. I used to find fault with parents who encouraged their young children to work, but having seen the circumstances, I have become less critical in my advancing age. Unless we have a definite solution, the families are likely to go hungry. This problem is particularly acute in the less developed countries if the father is an alcoholic and the mother has to support the family. I would love to see this child in school playing and enjoying childhood, but, then, life is not fair.
