            The 1970-built Sydney inner-harbour ferry Lady McKell pulls out from Northern Sydney's Cremorne Point - leaving a group of afternoon commuters in the foreground to walk for the nearby buses.  She is about 10 years old in this photo from late during the year 1980.

With the exception of the 1956-built 'orphan' vessel Kooleen, Lady McKell together with her six other various sisters were the first new large Sydney Harbour ferries to be constructed in almost 50 years.  Not since the early 1920s.

This Australian-built vessel (NSW State Dockyard @ Newcastle) still exists and works for a living today at the grand old age of 51 following her so-called 'retirement' during the 1990s.  These days she operates as a cruise vessel down in Melbourne on Port Phillip Bay - having been renamed 'Victoria Star'.   By all accounts she remains in very sound structural and mechanical condition.

It remains to be seen however whether any of the overseas-built ferries being constructed in our day in China or Indonesia for service on Sydney Harbour have reasonable prospects for anything like such a longevity - which in Lady McKell's case so far is a half-century and not out.

One suspects not.
