            The 1968-built Sydney inner-harbour ferry Lady Cutler approaches the Circular Quay Wharves with a moderate load of passengers on board.   Kirribilli provides the harbourside backdrop in this image taken on an overcast January 1981 day.

Lady Cutler was built by the NSW State Dockyard in Newcastle for the NSW State Government and represented the first major investment into construction of large inner-harbour Sydney ferries since 1922(!) (if you exclude the much smaller and generally unloved Kooleen of 1956).

Her design was to prove both popular and successful, and a further 6 sisters and half sisters (the well-remembered 'Lady' Class) were to follow over the subsequent 11 years.

Lady Cutler was prematurely 'retired' from operations as a ferry on Sydney Harbour in the 1990s (she was still in perfectly sound condition) and these days can be found located in Melbourne where she operates as a popular showboat and cruise vessel on the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay.

This Australian-built vessel is currently 53 years old (old for a steel-constructed vessel),  is still robustly in full time employment, and appears to be showing no signs of giving up the ghost anytime soon.
