#StopAdani and Voteclimate - Vigil outside Peter Khalil office #climatestrike #Fridaysforfuture - IMG_4597

            People from several groups gathered outside Labor MP Peter Khalil (Wills) office on Sydney Road for the May 3 National #climatestrike event organised by Student Strike for Climate.  

There was at least 40 people at it's peak, but perhaps 60 people there in total with people arriving and leaving the event. 

There were quiet contemplative meditation sessions, a few gatherings for discussion or chanting.

A group of 5 people were allowed in to meet with Peter Khalil. He made it known he was personally against fracking, but still tried to justify new gas pipeline infrastructure in northern Australia that will result in opening up new Fossil fuel gas fields in the (Beetaloo Basin) Northern Territory and (Galilee Basin) Queensland.

Khalil signed the climate emergency declaration in December 2016, and has been kept informed of the latest science, including the IPCC Special Report on global warming of 1.5C. He should be aware gas is not a transition fuel for this time of climate crisis. Three three demands of the student climate strikers are: 1. Stop Adani 2. No new coal or gas 3. 100% renewables by 2030.

If Khalil was serious about the climate emergency he would be working to change ALP policy on gas, not providing justifications at odds with what climate science says is needed for the speed of transition required.
