Many-lined Salamander (Stereochilus marginatus)

            This adult Many-lined Salamander was found within a leaf pack with several layers of decomposing matter.  Although metamorphosed adults do not retain gills, they are often found occupying submerged aquatic microhabitats.  When water conditions are low, they can be found under logs near the edges of watercourses and the surrounding floodplain.

These salamanders have an extended larval period that can last up to 2 years, much like their closest relatives the Pseudotriton and Gyrinophilus.

This particular day I managed to find 4 larvae and this single adult.
