Northern Mesquite Lizard (Sceloporus grammicus microlepidotus)

            Northern Mesquite Lizards (also referred to as Graphic Spiny Lizards) are found along the Lower Rio Grande Valley of south Texas.  This species is very timid and will usually scurry to the opposite side of a tree limb or trunk well before you see them. 
 They are most visible in the mornings on sunny days where they perch on the sunny side of trees to gather needed heat.  They are found most frequently on mesquite trees but also will occupy other rough-barked trees.
