Reticulated Flatwoods Salamander (Ambystoma bishopi)

            Reticulated Flatwoods Salamander larva from one of the remaining healthy populations in western Florida.  The pond this salamander resides in has been properly maintained with the cutting of invasive/ecologically invasive woody plants and strategic herbicide of larger trees, like swamp titi (Cyrilla racemiflora), that can obstruct sunlight with a large and close proximity canopy.  Also, prescribed fires that occur in the natural cycle (3-7 years) and time of year (late spring) that burns the surrounding pinelands and the duff layer that accumulates in the pond basin and chokes-out small herbaceous plants (like pipeworts) where egg deposition occurs.  Another great feature being implemented in this area is feral hog exclusion fencing.  Feral hogs are an invasive species that do immense damage to the landscape and particularly in damp areas where they root and wallow.
