            Date: 7 June 1928

Description: From 1902 to 1928, the SS America delivered mail, supplies, fish, and passengers. It was a shock when, on 7 June 1928, her hull was torn open by rocks while backing out of Washington Harbor on Isle Royale. Perched on a shoal, she slowly flooded. All passengers and crew made it safely to shore, but the captain stayed onboard until the ship was nearly gone. 

The America was found close to the surface in 1970. She has become the most visited wreck in the Great Lakes. Divers can still see a Model-T Ford onboard.
