Remains of Štamberk Castle - a photo on Flickriver

            A complex castle was built in a inhabitated area in southwestern Moravia in late 13th Century. It´s builders were very resourceful, used local massive granite rocks as a base for the fortress, which were carved to form a large defensive area between inner and outer walls. The castle core was standing on a massive granite formation, surrounded by deep from three sides. It was a important, well equipped seat of power, and fought over in the 14th Century, but it did not survive the Hussite wars - in 1423 a major Hussite army besieged the catholic city of Telč, and also attacked the nearby Štamberk, which was not manned with enough troops and was taken, after that it was leveled and never again rebuilt, Today some wall fragments can still be found, and of course the massive rocks carved into shape.
