Ruins of Brandýs Castle - a photo on Flickriver

            Remains of a very large gothique castle founded in late 13th Century, as part of the German colonisation of empty parts of upper Bohemia. The founder came on behest of the king from today Leipzig in Saxony. The castle was an important strongpoint until the county was purchased by the Pernsteins, who owned a more important castle nearby and because of not needing Brandýs, they partially demolished it to prevent it´s use by enemies or bandits. The next owner has been active in the 16th Century anti-Habrsburg revolt, and after that was crushed, he lost all his posession except Brandýs, where he had to live the rest of his life, and was prohibited to leave. This led him to restore the castle as his home, but it seems that it did not suit him because he began with construction of a chateau in the town right under the castle. His descendants lived in the chateau, and the castle was abandoned and changed into ruins. The remains are being conserved in the 20th Century and until today. The castle was very large and long, having four parts and many trenches carved into rocks, today the ruins of the main palace and defensive walls are still present.
