Memories of a mis-spent youth
In the January of 1984, I made the trek north with my railway 'bashing' friends Tim and Llew to ride some diverted trains over the threatened Settle & Carlisle route. We were fortunate in finding a spectacular snowy scene on route, but perhaps a little disppointed with the allocated haulage - the ubiquitous ETH 47/4s.

This shot was taken when we took a break and rode one of the old railbuses from Skipton to Haworth on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. The snow was deep and we still had a bit of spare energy left to hurl some snow balls at each other.

The Settle to Carlisle Railway During the 1970s, the S&C suffered from a lack of investment, and most freight traffic was diverted onto the electrified West Coast Main Line. The condition of many viaducts and tunnels deteriorated due to lack of investment. In the early 1980s, the S&C was carrying only a handful of trains per day, and British Rail decided the cost of renewing the viaducts and tunnels would be prohibitively expensive, However, in 1981, an active protest group, the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line (FoSCL), was established and campaigned against the line's closure. As a result of the successful campaign, the government finally refused consent to close the line in 1989, and British Rail was finally forced to start to repair the deteriorating tunnels and viaducts.
