Grand Ballon d'Alsace - a photo on Flickriver

            The Grand Ballon or Great Belchen (German: Großer Belchen; Alsatian: Grosser Belchen) is the highest mountain of the Vosges - 1,424 m (4,672 ft), located 25 kilometres (16 mi) northwest of Mulhouse, France. It is also the highest point of the Grand-Est French region.

There has been a radar station on the summit since 1997, which is used by civil aviation when approaching the airports in Strasbourg and Basel-Mulhouse. The station is surrounded by a viewing platform with orientation boards and was designed by Claude Vasconi. The center of the radar dome is at an altitude of 1435.5 m.
