Green Volcano

            Also in Germany we have volcanoes, but here they aren't black and smoke. I visited several of them in spring this year. 
Here you can see the "Windsbornkratersee" near "Bettenfeld" in the "Vulkaneifel". It is the only crater lake north of the Alps in Europe and the site of the latest activity (10.000 years ago) in the "Eifel". The "Eifel" is a low, volcanic mountain range in western Germany (southwestern North Rhine-Westphalia and northwestern Rhineland-Palatinate).
In the Tertiary geological era, the "Eifel" was a site of extensive volcanic activity. Some of the hills are volcanic vents. The Eifel is quite famous for its lakes which are former volcanic craters (maars). However the lake in the picture shows also a crater lake but this is no maar. The reason is that the crater rises over the ground level while a maar lies below ground level, so during a maar eruption the material is exploding out of the surface creating a whole which is filled with water while in the case a of the "Windsbornkrater" a classical cone was mounted up during the eruption by ejected material. The last eruptions took place around 10.000 years ago. The volcanism of the "Eifel" is caused by a hotspot. Research has shown that the mantle plume is still active.  The "Eifel" region is rising by 1-2 mm per year and still shows some weak activity like degasing. Historically, the "Eifel" volcanoes had inactive phases of 10.000 to 20.000 years between active phases, suggesting there is a possibility of future eruptions.
