2016 - CPH-NYC Cruise - Copenhagen - Middelgrunden Offshore Wind Farm

This may look familiar, we passed by this windmill farm a couple of weeks ago on the Zuiderdam's Baltic Cruise. This time the ship is heading west into the Atlantic Ocean.

The small piece of land in the foreground is Middelgrundsfortet.

Middelgrundsfortet is a former artificial island fortress constructed to protect the entrance to the Copenhagen Harbour.

Christian IX's government constructed the fort between 1890–94 to serve as a part of Copenhagen's sea-fortifications.

Today, Spar Shipping boats from Nyhavn will take you there during the months of June-July and August.

Middelgrunden Offshore Wind Farm:

When built in 2000 this was the largest offshore wind farm in the world and was established by Middelgrunden Wind Turbine Co-operative. Located in the Øresund strait, just a few km from Copenhagen, Denmark, it consists of 20 Bonus/Siemens 2MW wind turbines with a combined nominal capacity of 40 MW.

my name is Stefanie Borgmann and I’m part of the exhibition team at Futurium (www.futurium.de), a center for shaping the future in the government district of Berlin. Next year in September our house will open for the public and we’ll show a permanent exhibition on possible futures (about 3.000qm). We’re a federal cultural institution with the purpose of providing scientific information on possible future developments and empowering citizens to take action in shaping the future themselves.

One topic we’re discussing in our exhibition is decentral power systems, focusing on exemplary projects that found ways to build an independent power supply made by citizens all over the world.
