2021 - Vancouver - Lord Strathcona Community School

            Lord Strathcona Community School in yup, Strathcona, is the oldest continuously used school site in Vancouver.

The school is named for Donald Alexander Smith, first Baron of Strathcona (1820-1914) a  Sottish-Canadian financier and politician.

The school has 5 structures.  This is the "Primary" building on East Pender Street.

The Primary Building  erected in 1920-21 is of interest for being built when the School Board had little money. The bricks were recycled from the demolished original school (1891) and the frame was wood in a day when concrete was king.

The five building components, in order of construction, are the Junior Building (1897), facing Keefer Street; the Senior Building (1914, 1929), facing Jackson Avenue; the Primary Building (1921), facing East Pender Street; the Auditorium Building (1929), facing East Pender Street; and the New Building (1971-72), facing Keefer Street. 

Students originally went to Hastings Mill School. After the fire of 13 June 1886, the families scattered. A new school called East or Oppenheimer Street opened on 26 January 1887 at 522 Oppenheimer Street (now East Cordova Street.) It moved in March 1891 to Pender and Jackson and was called the East End School. The school was renamed Strathcona in 1900.

The character-defining elements of Lord Strathcona Community School include: 
The Classical decorative vocabulary, including pediment-like gables, cornices with dentils (modillions) and friezes, stepped parapets, cupola (on the Primary Building),

EARTHQUAKE UPGRADE:
A 2017 earthquake upgrade for Lord Strathcona was the first building in Canada to use seismic base isolation.

The system involves cutting the building in half horizontally and installing rubber buffers between the levels to mitigate shaking. 

The buffer zone deflects an earthquake’s tremors, confining the shaking to the school’s basement level. Next to nothing will be felt on the upper levels where the school’s staff and students inhabit - OK, hope so.
