2022 - Querétaro, Mexico - 2 - Hotel Casa de la Marquesa

            Querétaro has many historic buildings in its UNESCO designated World Heritage Site centre.

Many of the buildings have signage imbedded in the sidewalk in front, like this one.

Today, Casa de la Marquesa is a Querétaro hotel and we stay here.

Casa de la Marquesa (House of the Marquise) was built in the 17th century, completed in 1756.

It was built for the Marquise to live there separately from her husband, the Marquis, Don Juan Antonio de Urrutia y Arana , who lived two blocks away to the north, for reasons that have remained a mystery.

The house has been carefully restored several times, discovering the original decorative paintings on its walls.

The building housed the chief of the Triguarante Army , Don Agustín de Iturbide , in September 1821 , when he was on his way to Mexico City . 

A century later, the first Chief of the Constitutionalist Army , Don Venustiano Carranza , ordered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs be moved here in 1916.

Querétaro was the provisional capital of the republic during the work of the Constituent Congress.  It operated here until February 1917 when the federal government returned to Mexico City. 

Since the end of the 20th century, this historic Baroque jewel has been one of the most delightful hotels in Mexico.
