John Wilkes Booth boot and spur - Fords Theatre - 2012-05-20

            Boot cut from the leg of John Wilkes Booth after the murder of Abraham Lincoln. At the Abraham Lincoln Assassination Museum at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C.

When Booth leapt from the Presidential Box onto the stage below, he tripped on the flag bunting adorning the box.  He landed awkwardly, and broke his leg.  He nevertheless managed to hobble across the stage (wielding his bloody knife) and out the back door into the alley -- where an innocent young black kid waited.

Booth rode like lightning out of the city -- down Pennsylvania Avenue, down 11th Street SE, and out Good Hope Road SE into Maryland. He rode down Branch Avenue into Surrattsville, Maryland.  He met Dr. Samuel Mudd, one of his co-conspirators.  Mudd cut off Booth's boot, and fixed his leg.  Booth was to have spent the night in Surrattsville, but decided to ride on to Virginia...
