Sunflower (Patty Wickman) - a photo on Flickriver

“Sunflower (Patty Wickman)”, graphite Schoellershammer drawing board, 6” x 6”.

This small drawing of Los Angeles based artist Patty Wickman is unusual for me in that it is based on a photo I did not take. Apparently Patty had been taking some photos in her garden for reference for paintings when she also took a selfie that she posted on her IG. The photo corresponded with and helped clarify my current drawing project so I asked her if I could use it for a drawing and she said that would be fine.

The Voice and Site project incorporates reflections on the depicted person’s “vocation” / “voice” with a poetic dive into the mystery of being and place. Iconic precedents for the project include Bellini’s “St Francis” and most everything by Giorgione (especially “The Tempest” and “Three Philosophers”).
