Minimalism - a photo on Flickriver

Minimalism

            This is a Northern Brown Argus butterfly, resting on a plantain head in the Yorkshire Dales, not far from Grassington. Most of the Northern Brown Argus in Scotland completely lack black spots on the underwings, leaving only the white circles.  But in the North of England they have small black spots, usually smaller than the spots in Brown Argus.  The two species of Brown Argus can be incredibly similar though.  Northern Brown Argus just has one brood per year in June and July, whereas Brown Argus usually has two broods.
