Arctic Mirage - a photo on Flickriver

Arctic Mirage

            When the sun heats up the air in the cold Arctic, the difference in temperature between the freezing sea is so great that it creates a mirage known as the Fata Morgana.  This illusion bends light upwards, making surface ice appear as distant cliffs.  This was photographed in the frozen Arctic Ocean north of Spitzbergen.  This zone of frozen sea is known as pack ice.  The name Fata Morgana comes from the castle of Morgana le Fey in Arthurian legend.  Apparently, a series of rocks off southern Italy was a site where this mirage regularly occurred, and from where the name came. The mirage appeared to stretch up these particular rocks so they appeared like a fairy castle.  Sometimes in the Arctic, the sun stretches above the horizon on winter's days when the sun would not be expected to appear.  The sun doesn't actually appear, but the light stretches upwards, giving the illusion of a rising sun.
