            Working on Auxin Transport, a JAXA experiment, for benefit of plant cultivation on Earth as well as in space

This week I’ll be working quite a bit on JAXA’s Auxin Transport plant growth experiment. Here I'm watering some pea and maize (corn) seedlings, and I'll be cultivating later in the week. The plant hormone auxin was discovered through the study of how plants respond to light, as described by Charles Darwin in 1880. This experiment studies the role of auxins in seedlings grown in microgravity, leading to new insight into how gravity, or the lack of gravity, affects early plant development. It's hoped this will contribute to increasing the efficiency of plant cultivation on Earth, as well as in a space environment.
