Agecroft Hall, Windsor Farms, Richmond

            Built in the late 15th century in Lancashire, Agecroft Hall was dismantled in 1925 and brought to Richmond to be rebuilt in its present form by Thomas C. Williams.  The house as it stands is only about a third of its former size, as Williams never intended to rebuild the entire house, but chose what he wanted from the original and recreated with a more or less free hand what he desired in Virginia, spending over $250,000 in the process, an astonishing sum for the day.  Williams died in 1929, but his wife Elizabeth married David Morton.  She lived in the mansion until finally moving to a smaller house in 1969, after which it was turned into a museum.  Shakespearean plays are held in an outdoor theater here.  The surrounding neighborhood of Windsor Farms was built around this and another transplanted manor house nearby.  

Though the interiors are not precisely original, they are in keeping with the period, with the exception of the library.  The latter is kept as Mrs. Morton had it, so it provides an interesting counterpart to the rest of the house.  I would love to have taken pictures inside, but they had a blanket rule forbidding photography in the house.
